The Purpose of Therapy

Therapy can have many purposes.

 

Exploring

Exploring, gaining clarity, and defining your goals, no matter how minuscule or unobtainable they seem, is one of the most important parts of therapy. This doesn’t happen overnight, but through asking questions and pushing passed unhelpful thoughts, the goals will develop.

 

Healing

Healing past and present experiences: we will do this together by reframing the negative messages given to you throughout your life and the messages you tell yourself. We will take a closer look at the things you have been told about yourself and the world to see them from a different perspective.

 

Growing

Growing through learning how to handle life’s stressors, from the daily hiccups to devastating events, you will be able to move forward in life more confidently. Growth in your relationships will come from learning how to speak with love, regain trust, and gain the courage to state needs as well as admit mistakes. Learning to accept what you deserve, to love and be loved, will come from accepting yourself and placing value on YOU.

 

Challenging

Challenging your thoughts, actions, beliefs, and expectations of yourself and others requires going deeper. You will challenge your current state of being as well as what others expect of you and your obligation to meet them.

Often expectations you put on yourself are based on what you think others demand from you. Deciding what you expect of yourself is helpful in both defining your goals and obtaining them.

Humans are like Legos: We connect pieces to build up walls. Through the therapy process, we separate each piece to reshape them, redefine them, and look at them in different ways. Out of those same “wall” pieces, we reconnect them into something that is yours.

About Doctors Park Mental Health Center

Doctors Park Mental Health Center opened in 2015 to serve our community and the individuals who reside here. We help individuals, families, and couples through one-on-one therapy sessions, tutoring, youth social skills, and yoga. We can’t offer everything, but because we believe in healing the whole person we will suggest complementary services when it fits you.
